Frequently asked questions about home insurance

The answer to all your questions

We sort out all the most frequent doubts when it comes to taking out your home insurance.

It depends on the insurance company. At SegurCaixa Adeslas we offer Segurcaixa Hogar and Segurcaixa Hogar Completo which provide various types of coverage, such as 24/365 assistance, theft, material damage caused by water, and urgent repair coverage, in addition to maintenance services, jewellery and valuable object coverage, and third-party liability, to mention but a few.

Home insurance is not mandatory, except when your home is mortgaged or when the owner demands it in the case of a home with a rental contract.

When we talk about the building, we are referring to a home's structure, which may include the walls, the flooring, the ceilings and also any annexes like garages, common areas, patios, storage rooms and its maintenance areas and installations, like central heating and solar energy installations.

The contents include everything that is inside the home, including furniture, objects, appliances, household and personal goods, food or clothing, to mention but a few.

There are several ways of calculating them, like drawing up an inventory of everything we own and the surface area of the home plus its annexes. One of SegurCaixa Adeslas' professionals will help you calculate your home's building and contents.

It is possible to insure a home's contents when rent is being paid. It is also advisable to insure the building against any possible incidents that may occur.

The difference is that, whereas robbery involves stealing another person's property using force and violence, theft also consists of taking things which are not yours, but without using violence or intimidation.

Yes, our insurance policies include weather damage, though it depends on the types of coverage and the damage suffered due to wind, rain, snow or hail. Consult the types of coverage available in each kind of home insurance.

In this case, when it is less than the value of the property, there will be a proportion deducted from the indemnity and, if it is higher, then there will also be an indemnity adjustment according to the damage.

We cover material damage caused by accidental leaks from pipes, water or fuel leaks from tanks connected to the water installation, burst pipes due to freezing conditions or a failure to close taps, as well as any damage to the home caused by leaks resulting from sealing joint defects (bathtubs, shower trays, etc.) and expenses for repairing concealed or exposed pipes and unclogging pipes.

We do not cover any damage that originates in septic tanks, manholes, storm drains, sewers, drains or rainwater, nor the repair of corroded pipes or in a state of obvious disrepair. Neither do we cover the repair of appliances, taps, stopcocks, boilers, heaters, etc. that have caused the damage, nor any excess water consumption you might have had as a result of the accident.

We cover damage to the electrical installation or electrical appliances caused by voltage surges or dips, short circuits or lightning strikes. We do not cover breakdowns resulting from wear and tear of the elements themselves (for instance, an appliance receiving current but not working), breakdowns of appliances still under warranty, blown light bulbs, lights, halogen bulbs and the like, and any damage caused by maintenance work.

*For further details, see your policy’s terms and conditions and insured sums.

We cover material damage caused by fire, explosions or lightning strikes, as well as any associated extinguishing, salvaging and debris removal expenses. Furthermore, suppose your home becomes temporarily uninhabitable as a result of a claim covered by the policy. In that case, we will pay you the rental price of another home for as long as it takes to repair or rebuild your home. If you have rented out the home, we will indemnify you for the loss of the rent you no longer receive.

*For further details, see your policy’s terms and conditions and insured sums.

We cover material or personal damage caused to a third party for which you may be held liable —regardless of whether the cause of the damage lies in the house or insured fixed installations— resulting from carrying out minor building works or the damage caused by people living with you in the house, such as minor children. We also cover damage to third parties caused by pets, provided their relevant documents and sanitary controls are up to date.

*For further details, see your policy’s terms and conditions and insured sums.

Home insurance only covers liability for damage caused to third parties by pets, regardless of their species or the danger they pose.

However, you can take out supplementary pet insurance from SegurCaixa Adeslas and gain access to veterinary care and an extensive network of clinics, as well as to specific types of coverage for your pet (solely for dogs and cats).

Through home insurance, we cover any damage that may be caused to appliances due to the causes set out in the policy, such as water damage caused by a burst pipe, a fire or an electrical disturbance. Breakdowns of the appliance itself are not covered.

Nonetheless, SegurCaixa Adeslas places at your disposal an appliance and leisure goods supplement to offer you more extensive coverage in the event of any eventualities.

The policy covers locks that have been forced or stolen keys, which must be duly reported to the authorities. However, it does not cover the loss of keys.

We cover both the home itself and a storage room that is within a condominium or a single-family home, provided it is not more than 200 metres away from the main home.

It means insuring something below its value; that is, it is a situation where the insured sum’s value is lower than the actual value of the insured asset, and as a consequence of this, the proportional rule applies.

The formula for calculating the proportional rule is as follows: (insured sum in policy * amount of damage suffered) / actual value of the insured objects.

Thus, if the insured asset has an actual value of €100 and it has been insured for €50, where the damage amounts to €300, compensation will amount to €150

Robbery involves stealing something through the use of violence or intimidation. No violence or intimidation is involved in theft when something is stolen, and the victim becomes aware that one of their belongings is missing afterwards.

Home insurance is not compulsory. However, taking it out offers you peace of mind and protection against any unforeseen event that may take place in your home and it includes assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Yes, you can. As a matter of fact, it is advisable.

SegurCaixa Adeslas policies offer owners extensive coverage and provide specific guarantees, such as acts of vandalism caused by the tenant or the loss of rent in case of any eventualities that may occur.

SegurCaixa Adeslas policies likewise offer coverage to tenants should the home become uninhabitable.

A claim is any sudden unforeseen damage or loss beyond the insured party's control having the consequences set forth in your policy’s types of coverage like, for instance, breakage of glass or sanitary fixtures.

On the contrary, breakdowns or breakages that occur as a result of continued wear and tear over time are not considered a claim (for instance, a mechanical boiler breakdown).

To report a claim:

  1. If anyone is injured or you are in danger, call the 112 emergency service.

  2. Use all the means at your disposal to minimise the accident’s consequences.

  3. Report the accident as soon as possible on our website or by calling 900 50 50 40 or 91 489 43 17

  4. Take note of all the damage in order to provide as much information as possible on the accident and the damaged goods.

  5. Keep the accident’s remnants, traces and evidence.

Once all the documents needed to process the claim have been received and if no further clarification or intervention of a loss adjustor is needed to appraise the damage, compensation will be paid within 48 working hours of receipt thereof.

We can count on emergency plumbers, electricians and locksmiths to make your installations operational again and protect your home in the event of a claim covered by the policy.
